Ice Fishing in the mountains

So…. there is this group of guys in Salida that like to go ice fishing over at Antero Reservoir.  Last Tuesday I get this call from Dave… “we had the best day EVER on the ice.  Everyone was catching fish… 30-40 fish… and BIG fish.  Trout up to 28″.   We are going back tomorrow morning.  Be at my house at 7am.”

Talk about being fired up.  I couldn’t wait to get out there.  Wednesday morning came, clear and crisp… a beautiful sunrise.  We got to Antero about 7:45 and set up the fishing shelter, drilled holes, and got down to fishing.  While the fishing was not as hot as the day before we were not disappointed with the day.  Things started out a little slow but soon heated up.  I think we ended up with about 30-35 fish averaging 18″ between the 3 of us with the biggest being 23″.  We took 4 home to fillet and put the rest back for someone else to catch.  All in all, a great day.

I can’t wait for my bamboo ice rod to be ready. It is such a classy way to fish, very stylish, esp. the grips you are making. By the way, the I am that angler, and I am the oil, not the dipstick!
